The South Course has always been one
of the best public golf experiences in the
U.S., with sweeping ocean vistas and a
great layout. But in 2002 Rees Jones
worked his magic in redesigning the
layout as plans for hosting the 2008 U.S.
Open unfolded. We all know how that one ended, with an injured Tiger Woods defeating Rocco Mediate in a dramatic Monday playoff that went 19 holes. Now 'The South' has hosted an additional Open (2021, Jon Rahm) and The Genesis Invitational in 2025, on top of The Farmers, one of the most popular stops on Tour.
The South Course has a firm position alongside Bethpage Black and a
certain "new breed" of public course that can play host to golf's most important championships. Can a Ryder Cup be next?
