Sunnehanna: Ihm hangs on to win
Steven Ihm
JOHNSTOWN, Penn. (June 16, 2013) -- Steven
Ihm held on to win the Sunnehanna
Amateur on Sunday as the leaderboard shifted
all around him. Ihm, a senior at the University
of Iowa, shot a final-round 67 at Sunnehanna
Country Club in Johnstown, Pa., to win the
prestigious amateur event.
Ihm, of Peosta, Iowa, had a one-shot lead on
Rodolfo Cazaubon, a recent North Texas grad,
at the beginning of the day. Cazaubon had
charged up the leaderboard in Round 3 with a
6-under 63. He posted 73 on Sunday to finish
T-6.
Ihm turned in 4-under 31 on Sunday, then
made three bogeys and two birdies on the
back for his 67. He finished at 8-under 272.
Alabama senior Cory Whitsett was the next
closest player. Whitsett also shot a final-round
67 to climb from T-3 to solo second. Rick
Lamb, a recent Tennessee grad, and Mike
Miller shared third at 3 under.
The round of the day on Sunday belonged to
South Carolina sophomore Matthew NeSmith,
who shot 5-under 65 to climb from T-20 to T-
6.
ABOUT THE
Sunnehanna Amateur
The Sunnehanna Amateur was inaugurated in
July of
1954 -- it was the first country club
sponsored 72-hole stroke play competition for
amateurs
in the United States. The
tournament is played on a classic A.W.
Tillinghast
design. Only one other amateur
tournament in the United States can list the
likes of
Chick Evans, Arnold Palmer, Julius
Boros, Art Wall, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson,
Tiger
Woods, and Rickie Fowler as
contestants: the United States Amateur. Its
medal
play
format has been emulated by
countless amateur tournaments across the
country.
