David Noll, Jr.
KENNESAW, Ga. - David Noll, Jr., of Dalton posted a 5-over-par 76 in the third round of the Georgia Amateur Championship and takes a one stroke lead into the final round as he goes for his third state championship.
Noll is 1-over-par 214 (67-71-76), while Ridge Purcell of LaGrange (72-74-69) and Travis Williamson of Brunswick (71-72-72) sit one back at 2-over-par 215.
The 92nd annual Georgia Amateur Championship is taking place at Pinetree Country Club, July 11-14.
Purcell recorded a 2-under-par 69 in round three and was one of only two players to finish under-par on Saturday. His 69 came from an eagle on the par 5, 530-yard ninth hole, birdies on holes three, seven and 13, and bogeys on holes four, eight and 16. Williamson posted a pair of birdies (holes seven and nine) and three bogeys (holes five, 10 and 16) en route to his 1-over-par 72 on day three.
Cody Shafer of Evans, the one other player to post a score in red numbers, earned low-round of the day honors after firing a 5-under-par 66 in round three. His five-birdie, bogey-free outing puts him at 5-over-par 218 (72-80-66) overall and four strokes back heading into the final round.
Noll begins the final round going for his third Georgia Amateur Championship, and first since 2003, which was also the last time the event was held at Pinetree Country Club.
Noll tees off Sunday at 10:00 a.m. from hole 10 and will be paired with Purcell and Williamson. Two-time Georgia Mid-Amateur champion, Jeff Knox of Augusta, is 3-over-par 216 (70-73-73) and is two strokes back from Noll as he looks for his first Georgia Amateur title. Knox is the father of defending champion Lee Knox, who missed the cut.
