LEWISTON, N.Y. (July 24, 2013) -- Justin Shin proved last summer that he can win at the highest level of amateur golf. Now, he's trying to prove he can do it with consistency.

Shin, who won the 2012 Northeast Amateur over one of the top fields in the game, shot a first-round 6-under 64 and leads an equally-talented field at the Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club.

Shin's 6-under came thanks to eight birdies, including six on the back nine, in which he went out in 29. He birdied five of his last six holes and was the best of the best on an impressive Day 1.

Tyler Dunlap, a junior at Texas A&M, is tied for second alongside Beau Hossler, the incoming freshman at Texas who made headlines at the 2012 U.S. Open at The Olympic Club. Both players shot 5-under 65s and sit one back of Shin entering Round 2 of the 72-hole event.

A who's who of the top players in amateur golf follow with 14 players sitting within five shots of the lead. Max Buckley, California State Amateur champion Bryson Dechambeau and Peter Williamson are tied for fourth place at 3-under.

A group of players, including 2013 U.S. Open participant Gavin Hall, are at 2-under and tied for seventh.

Notable first-round scores include: Maryland Open winner Denny McCarthy (1-under, T12), Walker Cup selection Max Homa (E, T16), world No. 5 Brady Watt (E, T16) and defending champion Richy Werenski (E, T16).

Patrick Rodgers, another Walker Cup pick, struggled in Round 1, shooting 3-over 73. Walker Cup hopefuls Sean Dale and Brandon Hagy shot 72s.
