Mathias, Fogler, Young tied at SC Amateur
ELGIN, S.C. (Aug. 1, 2013) -- After the first round of the SCGA Amateur Championship, three players share the lead at five under par 66. Two of those leaders, Ben Fogler and Jon Mathias, are members of The Members Club at Woodcreek, the host club. Carson Young, a rising freshman at Clemson University, is also tied at the top.
Playing in the morning wave and both starting on hole #10, both Mathias and Young got off to fast starts shooting a respective 33 and 32 to start the day. Young’s front side included an eagle on the 517 yard par five 17th hole and a birdie on the tough 471 yard 18th. On their second nine, Mathias added three birdies along with one bogey on hole #3. Young kept knocking the flags down making three birdies on holes 1-5. In what looked like was going to be a two shot lead for the 18 year old, turned bad on his final hole of the day when an errant tee shot led to a round ending double bogey. Playing in the last group of the day, Vanderbilt golfer, Ben Fogler shot the low round of the afternoon by two shots with his score of 66. Consistent throughout the day, Fogler managed five birdies and no bogies to head into the second round tied for the lead.
