WV Senior Four-Ball: Dearborn, DeGroff win
DAVIS, W. Virg. (Sept. 5, 2013) -- Calvin Dearborn and Rick DeGroff have become first-time Champions of the West Virginia Senior Four-Ball Championship. The team shot 11-under-par for the tournament to seal the win, finishing four strokes ahead of Hurricane’s John Duty, Sr. and Kenova’s Mark Cross.
Dearborn and DeGroff sealed their win by shooting 8-under during the first round, bringing in the low round of the day. During the final round, the team fell back slightly, shooting 69, but it was still enough keep them ahead of the competition.
“I made a 40 foot putt on the first hole for birdie, and from there on out it was just smooth sailing,” Dearborn said. “We were up all day and that’s what we knew we had to do, just stay ahead.”
The Defending Champions, Steve Fox and Harold Payne, finished in third place at 6-under-par.
In the Senior Flight, Allen Bailes and Tom Turner, both members at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane, became the Champions, shooting a total of 137 for the Championship. Yawkey’s Kenny Mitchell and Alum Creek’s Charlie Smith gave the team a run for their money, with both shooting even-par today, but Bailes’ and Turner’s first round lead sealed the deal.
The Senior Four-Ball Championship was divided into two flights, where the Championship one played from 6,984 yards (blue tees). Those who wished to play in the Senior division, played from either the blue tees, or the whites at 6,436 (ages 60-69) or the gold tees for those 70 and older (5,966 yards).
