DANIELS, W. Virginia (Sept. 18, 2013) -- Huntington’s Steve Fox defended his title to win the 52nd West Virginia Senior Amateur Championship. His titles have now jumped to five. The Resort at Glade Springs hosted this week’s Championship, which included 18-hole Stroke Play qualifying, going straight into Match Play competition.
Fox earned the number two seed for Match Play from his title last year, where he went through five matches, knocking out them one-by-one. He took out Charleston’s Rich Tetrick in the Round of 32, Huntington’s Phil Zambos in the Round of 16, Kermit’s David Jude in the Quarterfinals, and Spencer’s Rick Moore in the Semifinals.
He went into the final match today against Past Champion and WV Golf Hall of Famer, Harold Payne. The competitive brothers-in-law went to 17 grueling holes, where they each went back-and-forth throughout the entire match. Three out-of-bounds shots by Payne put a serious dent in his game, hitting two OB on hole number three, and another OB on hole five. Each knocked their shots into water hazards, also affecting the match.
Although it wasn’t all negative. The two tied seven of the 17 holes played, with each making birdies here and there. On the 17th hole, the match was dormie as Fox knocked his tee shot to the left of the 18th tee box. Payne followed suit to hit his tee shot beyond the green, where it was never recovered. Fox punched his second shot onto the green as Payne was lying three from his second shot from the tee. At that point, Fox won the match, and overall Championship, 3 and 1. The 17th hole was a par 3.
The Gold division wrapped up this morning, as Huntington’s Charlie Stone defeated Crab Orchard’s Spot Leach, 3 and 2. The final match between the Silver division also wrapped up this afternoon, where Beckley’s Tom Brown took out number one seed, Dick Bolen, of Morgantown. Brown won 4 and 3.
Before the final match, Fox went up against Moore, defeating him 2 and 1; while Payne went to the finals by defeating 2012 Stroke Play Champion, Steve Jackson of Williamstown. Payne won 5 and 4.
Earlier in the week, Davin’s Jim Grimmett was Medalist in Stroke Play qualifying, shooting 2-under-par 70 on the resort’s Cobb course.
