Quarterfinals set at Atlanta Match Play

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. --- After a beautiful sunny day at Rivermont Golf and Country Club, the round of 32 and round of 16 matches are in the books at the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship, and eight competitors have advanced to the quarterfinals. The day's longest match featured the defending champion, David Noll, Jr., of Dalton, and Mitch Kim of Peachtree Corners in the round of 16, where Noll outlasted Kim in 23 holes.
The largest margin of defeat also was recorded in the round of 16 as Brad Hondros of Atlanta beat Beau Minkley of Atlanta, 9 and 7.
The four quarterfinal matches will take place Saturday morning with the semifinals to follow in the afternoon. The first match, featuring the defending champion Noll and the reigning Georgia Senior champion Jack Hall of Sea Island, will tee off at 8:00 a.m. Match two will see Matthew Hayes of Marietta take on Jerry McFadden of Johns Creek at 8:08 a.m. At 8:16 a.m., Hondros, who was co-medalist in the 18-hole stroke play qualifying round and is Rivermont's reigning club champion, will battle Zachary Healy of Peachtree Corners. Match four of the quarterfinals will go off at 8:24 a.m. and will have Greg Hamilton of Atlanta take on Michael Hines of Woodstock. The 95th annual Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship was open to male amateur golfers who are GSGA members and the field is made up of those with the lowest USGA Handicap Indexes. The format is 18 holes of stroke play qualifying with the low 31 and defending champion advancing to single-elimination match play.
