Dixie Amateur: 2 players share lead
CORAL SPRINGS (Fl.) – Two players from areas which are not considered golf hotbeds of the world share the first-round lead of the 83rd Men’s Dixie Amateur Thursday. Andri Bjornsson from Iceland and Richard Donegan from Okeechobee, Fl., posted identical rounds of six-under par 66 at the Woodlands Country Club in nearby Tamarac where the first two rounds will be played.
Only 15 of the more than 200 players were able to break par at Woodlands in the men’s division.
Two players were tied one-stroke back in the men’s division. McCormick Clouser, from Bluffton, In., and Mickey Werenski from South Hadley, Ma., were at 67, one shot ahead of Bob Campione, who resides up the interstate in Palm Coast.
Local favorite and 2012 champion Curtis Thompson opened with an even-par 72 and is six behind, tied for 24th.
