Texas S. Mid-Am: Helmle clings to lead
HOUSTON, Tx. (March 28, 2014) -- Shaun Helmle holds a slight lead after the first round of the South Mid-Amateur Championship, presented by CLUB CHAMPION. Houston’s Sterling Country Club is the host club for the second event of the 2014 Texas Golf Association South Regional Series.
Helmle, of Seabrook, shot 3-under par 69 in the first round which included four birdies and an eagle on the sixth hole, a 527 yard par five. Houston’s Bob Kearney and Chase Clayton, of San Antonio, are hot on Helmle’s heels, both with first round scores of 1-under par 71. Spring’s Tony Soerries and Houston’s Jess Bonneau each turned in opening rounds at even par 72.
With 17 players are 3-over par 75 or better, the title of South Mid-Amateur Champion is truly up for grabs over the final two rounds. The second round will begin off of the 1st and 10th tees beginning at 8:00AM on Saturday morning.

Eligibility: Entries are open to male amateur
golfers who are 25 years of age or older by
the
tournament start date and residing in the
South Texas region as defined by the Texas
PGA Sections (South of 31 degree parallel,
Salado TX and south is break point).
Applicants must have a certified USGA
Handicap Index of 8.4 or less.
Format: 54 holes Stroke Play. No Cut.
Field limit: 84 players.
