GOLETA, Calif. (March 30, 2014) -- Johnny Ruiz defeated Brandon Gama on the third playoff hole to win the 2014 Goleta City Championship at Glen Annie Golf Club.

Ruiz shot rounds of 71-67 to finish tied atop the leaderboard with Gama (67-72) after the two rounds of regulation play.

The fun began, however, when Ruiz was five shots back with only nine holes to go. Ruiz, from Simi Valley, started firing at flags on the back nine and the strategy worked. He tied Gama on the 18th and went on to win the playoff for his second Goleta City title.

Tim Snyder was alone in third thanks to rounds of 72-71 while Johnny Hogan (72-72) and Jerry Ledzinski (71-73) finished tied for fourth place.

Other flight winners included: Peter Malinowski (1st Net) and Joesph Ortega (2nd Net).

Ruiz, a recent Camaraillo High School graduate, is focusing on improving his game to turn professional. The 2011 Ventura County Star Boys Golfer of the Year, Ruiz left college to work on his game last year.

ABOUT THE Goleta City

The name 'Goleta' may not be as well known as it's famous neighbor, Santa Barbara. But it has great weather, and a great golf course called Glen Annie. Each spring, the Goleta City Championship in March brings out a strong field of local college players and mid-amateurs. The 36-hole, two-day championship will include championship, handicap and women's flights.
