Masters, follow the results link below
The Masters is nearly upon us. The golf world
will be glued to coverage of the 80th playing
at Augusta National Golf Club.
Among the favorites and contenders will be a
group of players not on the collective radar
for golf fans -- yet. The amateurs, six of
them, head to The
Masters with so much to prove and, really,
nothing to lose.
Last year, Tianlang Guan made the cut, albeit
slowly. Who'll be the amateur dandy this
year?
Let's take a look at the amateurs playing in
the 2014 Masters:
Matthew
Fitzpatrick
Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Ranking:
No. 5
Qualified By: Winning the 2013 U.S. Amateur
at The Country Club
Fitzpatrick, from England, is among the
world's best. He recently left
Northwestern University to focus on his game
full-time. At the U.S.
Amateur, he stormed through a group of
international powers to win the
Havemeyer Trophy and an invite to Augusta.
Fitzpatrick was also the low
amateur at last year's British Open.
Oliver
Goss
Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Ranking:
No. 12
Qualified By: Finishing as runner-up at 2013
U.S. Amateur
Goss was among the last men standing at The
Country Club. He beat fellow
Australian and then-World No. 1 Brady Watt to
advance to the final match
and punch his ticket to Augusta. A member of
the golf team at Tennessee,
Goss was six Top 10 finishes and a victory in
his time with the Vols.
Chang-woo
Lee
Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Ranking:
No. 269
Qualified By: Winning the 2013 Asia-Pacific
Amateur
Lee won the Asia-Pacific Amateur at 3-under,
finishing as the only
player under par. The memorable 2013 also
included a win on the Korean
Tour and a win at the Korean National
Amateur -- by 14 shots. The 20-
year-old also finished tied for second with
Rory McIlroy at the Korean
Open.
Mike McCoy
Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Ranking:
No. 16
Qualified By: Winning the 2013 U.S. Mid-
Amateur
McCoy is a longtime contender and winner in
national events but his
record 8-and-6 win in the championship match
last clinched his first
USGA title and a trip to The Masters. McCoy
also won the Coleman
Invitational and the George C. Thomas
Invitational last year. This
season, he was fourth at the Jones cup and
tied for 18th at last
weekend's Azalea Invitational at the Country
Club of Charleston.
Jordan
Niebrugge
Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Ranking:
No. 2
Qualified By: Winning the 2013 U.S. Amateur
Public Links
Nobody had a better summer than Jordan
Niebrugge. In successive weeks,
the Wisconsin native and then-rising
Oklahoma State star won the U.S.
Public Links, Wisconsin State Amateur and
Western Amateur. To punch his
Masters invite, he defeated Cal's Michael Kim,
1-up, in the Pub-Links
finale. In 114 holes of match play, Niebrugge
trailed for only two holes.
Garrick
Porteous
Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Ranking:
No. 7
Qualified By: Winning the 2013 British
Amateur
A former golfer at the University of
Tennessee, Porteous won the British Amateur
in rough conditions, topping Toni Hakula of the
University of Texas.
Porteous also took No. 1 in qualifying for the
2013 Scottish Amateur, placed second at the
Welsh Open Amateur and had Top 10s at the
Lake Macquarie,
Master of the Amateurs and European Nations
Cup.
