Birmingham Four-Ball: Goodson, Groover prevail
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 6, 2014) -- The Birmingham Golf Association's Metro Amateur Championship, a two-man best ball tournament open to residents of seven counties in and around Birmingham, was played April 5-6 at Hoover Country Club.
The Mid-Amateur Division was won by Lance Goodson and Steven Groover, who shot rounds of 68-67--135, for a nine-under-par total. Goodson, a former Alabama State Amateur champion and collegiate player at Vanderbilt, partnered with his good friend Groover, who played for Auburn.
Their two-day total saw them win by three from overnight leaders Vic Kyatt and Jake Nolen (66-72--138). Four teams finished tied on 139.
The Senior Division was won by the same 135 score, which was posted by Del Wood and Mark Miller shot 65-70. They won by three from defending champions Earle Bidez and Jon Golden (68-70--138) and overnight leaders Frank Vines and Jim McDaniel (64-74--138).

The Metro Amateur Championship is the City
Championship of
Birmingham. There is a Mid-Amateur division (ages
25-49), a Senior
division (50-59) and a Super Senior division (60+).
If you are 50 and
over, but want to play in the Mid-Amateur division
you may do so, but
must specify this when registering. It is open to
residents of Jefferson,
Bibb, Blount, Cullman, Shelby, St. Clair, Tuscaloosa
and Walker
counties. It is a team format (two-man, best ball)
over two days. For
the Mid-Amateur division the maximum handicap
per
player is nine,
for the Senior division the maximum handicap per
player is 14 and for
the Super Senior division the maximum handicap
per
player is 17.
