TOLUCA LAKE, Calif. (April 27, 2014) -- When Tim Hogarth (Simi Hills) moved to within one stroke of Dan Sullivan's 36 hole lead at the Kelly Cup with a stellar 73 on a fast, firm, and windswept Lakeside Golf Club, his 6 previous victories made it hard to bet against him.
Hogarth, 47, has proven his ability to close the deal on the state and national level, and has a Masters appearance under his belt as a result of a USGA Championship win. At Lakeside Golf Club, which was tournament-prepared to USGA condition, Hogarth shines particularly bright. He first won the Kelly Cup tournament in 1999 and 2000, then added four-straight victories from 2005 to 2008.
On Sunday, he continued his steady play with another 73 and cruised to a four-shot victory as neither Sullivan (Brookside GC) or Ed Cuff (3-time champ from Fairbanks Ranch) were able to make a charge.
Two of the most solid rounds of the day came from several groups back as Keith Kinsel and Brian Woolf of Oakmont jumped up the leaderboard thanks to Sunday rounds of 71 and 73 respectively. Kinsel's 1-over 71 was the lowest of the day; the longtime Southern California competitor moved from 10th to 2nd place. Woolf, a former University of Arizona golfer, came out of the 1st flight (which he won) and also tied for second along with first round leader Sullivan (78) and David Lebowitz from Hillcrest (74).
The unique Kelly Cup format allows a full 190 competitors to play an extremely challenging and well-conditioned course from the same tees, and anyone that shoots a score in the top 15 or within 10 strokes of the lead after 36 holes plays the final round on Sunday. The top three players in each flight are recognized, those flights included a senior flight won by Doug Williams of Hong Kong G.C. at 153. (Williams finished T18 overall.)
ABOUT THE KELLY CUP

Kelly also partnered with pros Sam Snead and Jay Hebert, respectively to win the Bing Crosby Pro-Am. (Crosby was a fine golfer and also won numerous Lakeside club championships.) A statue of Mr. Kelly stands on the lawn outside the clubhouse.
