Timuquana Cup: Nelson (68) leads after Round 1
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (May 2, 2014) -- Danny Nelson fired a 4-under 68 and leads by three shots at the 2014 Timuquana Cup at Timuquana Country Club.
Nelson, a Savannah, Georgia-area elite player, opened up the three-shot lead on a solid field consisting of 40 of the top mid-amateurs and 20 of the top senior amateurs in the country.
Josh Hammond is alone in second place thanks to his 1-under 71.
Ben Hayes, Blair Scurlock and Charles Waddell all shot even-par 72 and are tied for third place.
Five shots behind and tied for sixth place is a group of three players hoping to make a run on Saturday's second of three rounds, including former NCAA champion Nick Gilliam.

Invitational tournament with a field
consisting
of 40 of the top Mid Amateur players in the
country, together with 20 of the top
Senior
Amateurs and 18 more Super Senior amateurs .
The theme of the event will be a
"Gathering of
Friends" with a small, select field
dedicated to
those individuals whose passion is
amateur
golf. The Timuquana Cup will be a
celebration
of amateur golf.
The tournament chairman is Steve Melnyk,
and
USGA Rules Official Tom Dudley will be in
charge of course set up and the rules of
competition. One of the highlights of this
year's event will be a cocktail cruise on the
St.
Johns River departing from the Timuquana
Country Club dock and housing will be
available
for many competitors in members' homes.
