Havemeyer Invitational: Abbondandolo tops Berman for title
BAY SHORE, N.Y. (May 10, 2014) -- Dan Abbondandolo rolled past Hal Berman to win the 2014 Havemeyer Invitational at Southward Ho.
In the final match, Abbondandolo toppled Berman, 5-and-4 to win the prestigious title filled with many of the New York and Long Island area's top players.
Defending champion Joe Saladino lost to the champion in Saturday's semifinal round, 3-and-2. In his run to the final, Abbondandolo also beat Dave Segot (19 holes) and Brandon Davis (3-and-2) after taking the No. 7 seed in stroke-play qualifying.
Berman, the No. 12 seed, knocked off Todd Kozlowsky (2-and-1), Mark Reilly (7-and-6) and Matthew Esposity (1-up) to reach the finale.
The Havemeyer Invitational is a regional event played on an A.W.Tilinghast design that was bailed out by Horace Havemeyer during the Depression era.
