Philly Mid-Am: Lutz leading
Chip Lutz
Chip Lutz

KING OF PRUSSIA, Penn. (May 21, 2014) — Chip Lutz is searching for his third Philadelphia Middle-Amateur title, but has found himself on top of a stacked leaderboard.

A first round 68 from Lutz has given him the lead by one over Gary Daniels and Peter Barron III, last year’s runner-up. 29 players are within five strokes of the lead heading into tomorrow’s final round, all with a chance of taking down the reigning U.S. Senior Amateur medalist.

Lutz, 59, started strong, and got all the way to five-under after a string of four straight birdies on holes 10-13, but bogeys on the par-three 14th and 17th dropped him back to the field.

Lutz has made a habit of beating opponents half his age handily. His previous wins in this event, open to anyone 25 or older, came in 1998 and 2007.

Last year’s champion, Michael McDermott, sits six strokes back at three-over, good for a tie for 30th.

The cut, to the low 70 players and ties, came at seven-over 78. For the full results, follow the link.
