FRESNO, Calif. (May 26, 2014) -- Seven years after he last captured the Fresno City title, Jason Anthony of Fairfield bested a strong field to take the 2014 title at Riverside Golf Course.
Anthony, who qualified for the 2013 US Amateur and played on the NCGA Seaver Cup team, was almost caught by Ryan Higton after failing to capture the magic he had brought to the course in the first two rounds (a pair of 67s). His 73, however, was good enough for a one stroke victory despite the pressure of Higton's 69.
Heading into the 54th hole with a one stroke lead, Anthony was able to match the birdie posted by Higton (who was playing a group in front) and avoid a sudden-death playoff.
Higton really shot himself into contention on Sunday by birdieing the final four holes for a 67 after posting 72 in round one. His brother, Jason, posted a 66 in the second round and was just two behind Anthony at that point and was paired with Anthony in the final round.
The tournament brought back memories of 2007, when Anthony also edged Ryan Higton by a shot.
