It's the news amateur golf fans were just waiting to hear.

Matthew Fitzpatrick will soon be turning professional.

The reigning U.S. Amateur champion recently announced his decision to turn professional following the U.S. Open, for which he is exempt.

Fitzpatrick, who also took low amateur honors at the British Open last year, left Northwestern University after just one semester to focus on his game full-time.

He'll make is professional debut at the Irish Open following the U.S. Open and signed with Chubby Chandler's management team.

By virtue of his U.S. Amateur win and high-profile amateur status, Fitzpatrick has had the opportunity to try his game against the PGA Tour. He missed the cut at The Masters by a shot but logged a top-25 the following week at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town.
