W. Penn. Mid-Am: Brown surges as Stimmel, Smith fall
WEIRTON, W. Virg. (May 28, 2014) -- David Brown stormed back to top two of the region's top players and win the 2014 Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur Championship at Williams Country Club.
Brown followed his first-round 71 up with a 4-under 68 on Wednesday to win by a shot over Arnold Cutrell (71-69), Mike Marron (71-69) and Artie Fink, Jr. (69-71).
Brown surged in the final round to topple leader Rick Stimmel and Nathan Smith, who was tied for second place overnight.
Stimmel, a former U.S. Open participant, finished alone in fifth place after a final-round 73. Smith, a four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champ and two-time U.S. Walker Cup team member, shot a closing 74 and finished tied for sixth place.
