Iowa Sr. Match Play: Peterson tops Kahler
DIKE, Iowa (June 1, 2014) -- Ron Peterson is the 2014 IGA Senior Match Play Champion. He defeated Steve Kahler of Marion 1 up in the final match at Fox Ridge Golf Club in Dike. Peterson, of Johnston, stuck his approach to a foot on the 18th hole. He held a 1 up lead at the time and Kahler simply conceded the birdie and the match without anyone hitting a putt.

The championship match was close throughout the afternoon. Kahler held a 1 up lead through much of the front 9 but birdies at 8 and 10 propelled Peterson to a 1 up lead. Kahler tied it back up with a birdie at 12 but Peterson took the advantage right back with a par at 13 and then won the 14th with a par as well to go 2 up. Kahler then won the short par-3 15th, which was playing into a very stiff wind, with a bogey. The two then havled the remaining holes to finish with a 1 up result.

It took Peterson 19 holes to dispatch #1 seed Joel Yunek in their morning semifinal match. It was a back-and-forth match with no one holding anything more than a 1 up lead. Yunek lead by a hole after the first nine, but Peterson made birdies at 10 and 11 to go 1 up. Yunek won the 13th, Peterson won 15 then Yunek won 16 to square the match again. Pars at 17 and 18 sent them back to the first hole where Peterson's bogey proved to be enough.

Kahler's semifinal match was a bit more one-sided. He went down early to Hingtgen when his tee shot at #3 went out of bounds. He then won the fourth hole to square it, then lost the 5th and immediately followed that with a win at #6. A par at 7 gave him two holes in a row and a 1 up lead he would never relinquish. Victories at 9 and 11 got him to 3 up. Hingtgen had a brief respite with a win at 15 but Kahler closed out the match with a par on the 16th hole.

Tim Taylor of Ankeny won the President's Bracket on Sunday morning with a 2&1 win over Patrick Zurck of Waterloo. Taylor was very steady throughout. He won the first hole with a par and maintained that advantage until Zurick made birdie at 5 to square the match. But Taylor immediately got the lead back with a par at 6 then won the 7th with a par as well. He would eventually get his lead to three up through 13 holes but Zurick came right back by winning the 14th and 15th holes. Taylor then won 16 with a par to get back to 2 up and finished off the match when both players made par at 17.

For the first time ever the championship was contested somewhere other than Fort Dodge Country Club. The IGA took over administration of the Senior Match Play from the officials at FDCC in 2013. The event remained at FDCC in 2013 but will now begin to rotate sites like most other IGA Championships.

First round matches in both brackets were played Friday afternoon. Round two matches were played Saturday morning. Championship quarterfinals and President's semifinals took place Saturday afternoon. Championship semis and the final match of the President's bracket were held on Sunday morning. The championship match was played Sunday afternoon.
