Grady Brame
BROUSSARD, La. (June 8, 2014) -- Grady Brame, Jr. of Hammond fired a nine-under par 63 on Sunday to win the 2014 Louisiana Golf Association by six strokes over Myles Lewis of New Orleans. Brame, Jr. did not make a bogey over the weekend and was sixteen-under par in his final two rounds of the Championship. Brame Jr.’s 65 on Saturday was the lowest round of the Championship until he bested that by two strokes with Sunday’s 63. As well as Brame, Jr. played on Saturday, he started the final round at eleven-under par, two shots back of the 54 hole leader Lewis and one shot behind Ross Davis of Baton Rouge. Brame, Jr. finished the Championship at twenty-under par 238, one stroke shy of the all-time record set by Alan Morgan at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in 2001.
Brame, Jr. started his round at 10:48 AM and wasted no time getting under par for the day, and he birdied the par 5 1st hole. He made three consecutive pars then made an eagle at the par 5 5th hole. He parred the next hole, the par 3 6th and then made birdie at the par 5 7th hole. Brame, Jr. made the turn at four-under par 32. He birdied the par 4 10th hole then made par at the par 3 11th. The next stretch of holes was where Brame, Jr. took his game to new heights. He chipped in for birdie at the par 5 12th hole. Next, he birdied the par 4 13th hole, also known as “Gator’s Jaw,” which had only yielded two birdies all day until Brame Jr.’s. Another birdie at the par 5 14th brought Brame, Jr. to nine-under for the day where he would remain as he coasted home with four consecutive pars. Brame, Jr. definitely took advantage of the scoring opportunities on Le Triomphe’s 5 par 5s. Brame, Jr. plays college golf for Southeastern Louisiana University and will be a Senior this fall. He recently competed in the NCAA Regional Tournament in San Antonio, and this victory showcases just how well he’s playing right now. His father, Grady Brame Sr. also played in this event, finishing tied for 36th at seven-over par 295. The elder Brame, a mainstay at LGA Championships, won this Championship in 2002, and Grady Brame Jr.’s win on Sunday makes the Brames the first father-son duo to ever win the LGA Amateur Championship. Rounding out the top five are: 3.) 2013 LGA Amateur Champion Eric Ricard of Shreveport (69/275), 4.) John Talley of St. Martinville (67276), and 5.) John Lewis Sams of Coushatta (68278). Other scores under par on Sunday were shot by: Mick Huffman of Maurice (67/284), Burt Allen of Shreveport (69/285), Jason Noto of Luling (69/290), Blake Caldwell of Ponchatoula (70/283), Chris Baker of Shreveport (70/290), Lewis (71/274), Hayden Bigby of Baton Rouge (71/285), Scott Haynie of Brusly (71/288), Ken Buchan of Monroe (71/289), Eamon Bradley of Hammond (71/289), Blake Kelley of Mandeville (71/295), Mitchell Haddox of Ruston (71/295). 2014 marked the third time Le Triomphe hosted the LGA Amateur Championship, having also been host venue for this Championship in 1987 and 1996. The Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed Le Triomphe course drew positive reviews from this field of the top amateur players in Louisiana. The course played to a par of 72 at approximately 6,949 yards on Sunday. Le Triomphe is only one of two clubs in the state of Louisiana to host a sanctioned P.G.A Tour event, the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, which is the Web.com Tour’s first stop in the United States each season. The top 40 and ties earned exempt status for next year’s Championship at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe.
