PITTSFORD, N.Y. (June 13, 2014) -- Garrett Rank and Taylor Pendrith of Canada are tied at the top of the Monroe Invitational, and with many players close behind, it’s anyone’s game heading into the final round.
Rank, the second round leader, shot two-under 68 today for a three round total of 200, while Pendrith posted a strong 66 to tie Rank at the top.
Rank started off well this morning, birdieing his first hole to get to nine-under, but bogeyed the long par-four 3rd hole and doubled the par-five 9th hole after a skulled approach shot.
He got those strokes back and then some, however, birdieing four of his last seven holes to fire a 31 on the back nine for a 68.
“I played exactly the same as the last two days, I just hit one bad wedge shot,” Rank said. “I finished strong, birdied the last three holes, so I’ll ride some momentum heading into tomorrow.”
Pendrith had quite a dramatic round, making only 6 pars on his way to a 66. He added eight birdies along with four bogeys. He has made 20 birdies so far over 54 holes of play.
Adam Ball of VCU is by himself in third after a 66. The 2013 U.S. Amateur quarterfinalist is eight-under for the week.
The low round of the day was a 65, posted by Jack Whelan of St. Lawrence, Dylan Newman of Iona, and Beau Titsworth of Oklahoma.
Thirteen players are within five strokes of the lead, and with the abundance of red numbers being scored at Monroe Golf Club, anything could happen tomorrow, and lots of players still have a chance to win.
Rank and Pendrith, who are teammates on the Canadian National Team, will have the advantage on the field when play resumes tomorrow morning. So far this week at Monroe, the duo has proven Team Canada’s mission statement true: “To produce the best amateur golfers in the world.”
