Zigfield Troy Open: Roderique wins in record pace
By Chad Arisch, Local Amateur Golf
WOODRIDGE, Ill. (June 22, 2014) -- Greg Roderique, of Naperville, IL is this year’s Zigfield Troy Open Champion.
The 27 year-old won the coveted Straw Hat in a record total of 7 under par over 36 holes on the Zigfield Troy Par 3 Golf Course in Woodridge, IL on June 21st and 22nd. Roderique took the 18 hole lead on Saturday with a three-under par 51 while last year’s winner, Raymond Knoll, a sophomore on the Iowa Hawkeyes golf team lurked two shots back. He then went one shot better on Sunday with a 4 under par 50. His total of 101 beat the 36 hole record first set by Roderique’s older brother Andy, a three-time ZTO champion. It was clutch par putting combined with 6 birdies on Sunday that kept Roderique in the lead. He answered Knoll's chip-in birdie at 17 with a 12 foot birdie putt of his own giving him a two shot cushion over Knoll and momentarily over rising star Mitchell Davis of Valparaiso, IN. The 14 year-old Davis was watching Roderique birdie 17 while lining up his own birdie at 18 which he then calmly drilled to finish one shot back at 6 under. He torched the course on Sunday with a seven-under par 47, posting 7 birdies with no bogies to tie the 18 hole tournament record.
Another young gun applying pressure was Kelly Grassel, the 2012 and 2013 Indiana State Girls High School Champion. Playing in the final group with Roderique and Knoll, Grassel also shot a bogey-free round with 4 birdies to finish alone in third, two shots back. Grassel was again the top woman golfer in the ZTO, and out-shined 87 of the male contestants in the 33rd playing of the ZTO. Afterwards, Greg Roderique smiled and said “I want to thank my brother Andy, for not playing in the tournament this year,” It was Andy that gave Greg his 2002 Zigfield Troy Open scoreboard winner's summary and made Greg put it on the wall in his bedroom.
Greg added matter of factly, “Andy said that I couldn’t take it down until I won a ZTO.” Finally, Greg can take it down and put his own ZTO winner's summary up on the wall.
