PORTLAND, Ore. (June 27, 2014) – Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) won the 84th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship in their respective divisions on Friday, June 27th at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.
Elmes won the title in the Juniors Division, defeating his high school teammate Cole Madey (West Linn, Ore.) 5 and 4. Stoll beat Kaitlin Collom (Klamath Falls, Ore.) in 19 holes for the Girls Division Championship. Stoll is just the fifth Girls player ever to hold both the Oregon Women’s Amateur and Oregon Junior Amateur Championship titles concurrently (Monica Vaughn, 2010; Mary Budke, 1971; Sue Jennett, 1960; Carole Jo Kabler, 1955). Stoll is also the first back-to-back Girls Division champion in the Oregon Junior Amateur Championship since Nancy Kessler (1983-84).
For Stoll, winning both last week’s Oregon Women’s Amateur title at the OGA Golf Course along with the Oregon Junior Amateur Championship this week has made for a special last two weeks.
“It’s really exciting,” said Stoll. “After playing last week, I just came into this week feeling optimistic and feeling good about my game. It’s a huge deal to come out here, last week and this week, and just play my best and get two wins.”
Going into the 17th hole, Collom held a 2-up lead on Stoll. But with two par-5s left, Stoll won the 17th hole with a birdie and forced extra holes after a par on the 18th hole. The two players went to the 19th hole (1st hole), and Stoll knocked her second shot to two feet from the pin. Collom hit a great second shot out of a fairway bunker, and had a 20-footer for birdie. Collom hit her putt just past, while Stoll tapped in for the victory.
“Going into the 19th hole, I felt like the momentum was kind of towards me after winning two [holes],” said Stoll. “I just happened to hit a really good shot in there, and I got a win.”
Elmes birdied four of the first eight holes in his Championship match, leading by a score of 4-up going into the back nine. Elmes moved his lead to 5-up after the 10th hole, then he and Madey tied the next four holes, which is all he needed for a 5 and 4 win.
High school teammates at Lake Oswego High School, Elmes knew Friday was going to be a fun day playing against Madey.
“I knew today was going to be fun because Cole is my teammate and one of my good friends, and we play a bunch of golf together,” said Elmes. “I was just looking forward to having fun. Didn’t know whether I was going to, or if he was going to come out on top, but luckily I did.”
The 85th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship will be held at Eagle Crest Resort – Ridge Course from June 22-26, 2015.
