WILMINGTON, N.C. (July 14, 2014) –– The 24-golfer Carolinas team owns a nine-point lead over their Virginias counterparts, 22½-13½, following the opening day of the 58th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches being conducted at Porter’s Neck Country Club.
First day play consisted of four-ball match play competition. In the format, three points are available per match; a point is scored for winning the outward half, the inward nine and the overall match.
Carolinas won six opening day encounters and halved three others.
For Carolinas, the contingent of Kathryn Miranda (Lexington, S.C.)-Rachel Moore (Lexington, S.C.) and Patty Moore (Charlotte, N.C.)-Karen Feree (Hilton Head, S.C.) each posted a shutout and three points. Carolinas’ team members Hayley Hammond (Mooresville, N.C.)-Lea Venable (Simpsonville, S.C.) contributed three points. Virginias’ regulars Lauren Greenlief (Oakton, Va.) teamed with Abby Portyrata (North Chesterfield, Va.) to post a 3-0 blanking.
Carolinas also received wins and two and a half points from North Carolinians Ashley Thompson (Waynesville, N.C.)-Karli Heimbecker (Sanford, N.C.) as well as Cecilia Fournil (Columbia, S.C.)-Savannah Hallman (Mount Pleasant, S.C.). Virginias registered two a half points from seniors Cindy Morris (Portsmouth, Va.)-Susan Podolsky (Alexandria, Va.). Also for Virginias, Cyndi Carlson (Chesapeake, Va.) and Joanne Kitusky (Glen Allen, Va.) added a victory and two points.
Importantly for Carolinas, the team scored at least one-half point in 11 of the 12 matches. Virginias posted three wins on the first day, but were also shut out in three encounters.
The matches continue through Wednesday, July 16.

The Virginias-Carolinas Women's Team Matches
originated in 1957. The matches pit some of the
best
golfers from North and South Carolina against their
Virginia and West Virginia counterparts. The
championship consists of four-ball match play,
modified alternate shot four-ball match play and
singles matches. In the format, a point is scored for
winning the outward half, the inward nine and the
overall match. The Carolinas team consists of 24
total players; 14 amateur players (ages 18+), eight
senior players (ages 50+) and two super senior
players (ages 60+). The matches are invitation only.
