VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (July 16, 2014) -- Alison Lee still holds her lead after two days at the North & South Women’s Amateur, but she has some company at the top.
Lauren Kim and Casey Danielson moved up the leaderboard and into a tie for the lead with Lee on Wednesday at Pinehurst No. 8.
Stanford’s Danielson fired a three-under 68, the low round of the day, for a two-day total of two-under 140. Her round consisted of three birdies and 15 pars, no small feat at the long and demanding No. 8 course.
“I was very consistent,” said Danielson in an interview after her round. “I’m hitting the ball really well. I’m striking it a lot better than I have been.”
Kim, also a player at Stanford, was not as consistent as her teammate on Wednesday. She started by making double on her first hole, then birdied the 15th, her sixth hole of the day, to get back to one-over.
After making the turn, she had a six-hole stretch that included four birdies and two bogeys. She parred the last three to post a second straight one-under 70.
Lee, of UCLA, had the outright lead for a stretch, but could not finish strong enough to hold off the Stanford duo.
She made nine pars to start her round before getting to four-under for the tournament with birdies on the 10th and 14th holes. She cancelled out the birdies with bogeys on 16 and 17, and ended with an even-par 71 on the day.
Defending champion Ally McDonald is currently tied for eighth after a second consecutive one-over 72.
The top 16 players will continue on to match play after Thursday’s third round. There are 17 players at five-over 147 or better.
