Texas Mid-Am Match Play: Colby Harwell earns medalist honors

BRYAN, Texas (July 24, 2014) —Colby Harwell on Thursday fired an impressive 6-under-par 66 to lead the 85-player field in the qualifying round of the State Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship at Traditions Club.
Harwell, who is from Robinson, will hold the No. 1 seed headed into the match play bracket. During the qualifying round, Harwell poured in a total of 7 birdies against only one bogey.
"Everything was working today," Harwell said. "My putting really stood out."
Harwell will tee it up Friday at 7:30 a.m. to initiate the Round of 32. Nathaniel James, Washington & Lee University Alum, finished a shot behind Harwell. James shot a 5-under 67 to earn the No. 2 seed.
Bob Kearney of Houston grabbed the third seed with a 4-under 68.
The cut for the qualifying round was a score of 5-over 77. The final three match play seeds were determined by a seven-man playoff that took two holes to complete.

Texas Mid-Am Match Play
Eligibility: Entries are open to male amateur golfers
with a GHIN handicap index of 5.4 or less, and who
are 25 years of age or older as of the first round of
the Championship.
Format/Field Size: Scheduled for 18 holes of stroke
play qualifying on Thursday. The low 32 players
advance to match play beginning on Friday. Round of
32 and 16 played on Friday, Quarter and Semifinal
matches played on Saturday, and Final match on
Sunday morning. The field is limited to 84 players.
