Four semifinalists remain at Alabama Match Play
-story courtesy of the Alabama Golf AssociationUNION GROVE, Ala. (August 8, 2014) — There are just four players left in the field in the Alabama State Match Play Championship at Cherokee Ridge Country Club in Union Grove after two grueling days of two matches a day.
Tyler Hitchner, Matt Johnson, Matthew Gourgeot and Sheldon Statkewicz are those left standing and one of them will be crowned a state champion Saturday afternoon after the semifinals and final conclude.
Hitchner of Tuscaloosa is an incoming freshman at the University of Alabama and he beat reigning State Amateur champion Will Cannon of Hoover and UAB in Friday afternoon's quarterfinals. He had beaten his soon-to-be Alabama teammate Tom Lovelady in Friday morning's round of 16.
Hitchner will meet former University of North Alabama golfer and Decatur resident Gourgeot Saturday morning. Gourgeot beat Mountain Brook High School golfer Wilson Simmons in the quarterfinals.
The other semifinal will pit former State Mid-Amateur champion Johnson of Dothan, who beat UAB incoming freshman Lee Hodges of Elkmont in the quarterfinals, against Mobile's Statkewicz, who will be a sophomore at Spring Hill College. Statkewicz took out Irondale's Torrie Coghlin, who is the reigning State Mid-Amateur champion and a caddie at Shoal Creek. He played collegially for the University of Montevallo.
