High Plains Amateur: Bradley Lane leads by 2
GARDEN CITY, Kan. (Aug. 23, 2014) -- A popular Midwest tournament teed off Saturday at The Golf Club at Southwind, and Bradley Lane of Lawrence, Kansas put himself in excellent position with a 3-under 68. He leads four players who shot 70 by a single shot: Andrew Beckler, Kale Reynolds, Grant Vollertsen and Zach Kirby.
Lane played golf for Rice University before earning his Masters and PhD at Indiana Univerity. He is now an Assistant Professor in the School of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Kansas. (And obviously still has plenty of game).
Defending champion Charlie Stevens went out on the front nine like a man on a mission (to win back-to-back titles!) with a 2-under front nine after making birdies on Nos. 3, 5, and 6. But a double-bogey on the par-5 10th and two closing bogeys meant he had to settle for a 74 and go into the second round chasing by 6.
The 18 hole cut fell at 79.
Shaun Audrain of Garden City posted 75 to lead the Masters division by 2 shots; defending champ of that flight Zack Burton is not in the field this year. In the Senior division, Phil Adams (Garden City, KS) and Steve Newman (Wichita) are tied for the lead at 71.
