Gene Elliott wins Iowa Senior Amateur by two
WATERLOO, Iowa (August 27, 2014) — Gene Elliott (at left in white with IGA President Tom Christensen) came from three shots down in the final 18 holes to win the 36th Iowa Senior Amateur Championship at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo.
Elliott put together a terrific final round 2-under 70 to win by two shots over defending champion Joe Palmer.
Elliott got off to a fast start in the final round, making birdie on two of the first three holes. He then settled into mostly pars throughout the day, with a bogey at 6 and a birdie at 11 mixed in.
This is the first win at the Iowa Senior Amateur for the 53-year old from West Des Moines. He has won the Iowa Amateur Championship three times.
Bill Manske of Algona held a one-shot lead heading into the final day. He played good golf but was simply unable to crack through as he went birdie-less and posted a final round 76. He finished tied for 3rd with Curtis Holck of Ankeny, three shots back of Elliott. Holck posted rounds of 75-72-72.
In the Super Senior Division Jeff Petersen of Waterloo claimed the title by three over Colin Williams of Marion. He didn't get off the best start, shooting a first round 81, but a division-best 74 in round two put him right back in position. Then his final round 78 was enough to get the job done.
