Vitt, Nathan win shortened Merit Amateur
LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. (Sept. 12, 2014) — Kyle Nathan and Andrew Vitt gained 15 points in the Merit Amateur's stableford format to win the event by four shots.
Two-time defending champions Brian Atkinson and Blake Johnson finished in fourth place with eight points.
This year's tournament's format had to be modified due to the heavy rains Merit Club received Wednesday morning. The course took on over an inch and three-quarters of rain in the morning and the tournament was able to get 18 holes of better ball in Wednesday afternoon.
Thursday, the event played nine holes of better ball, followed by 18 holes of team aggregate.
The weather was cool, in the fifties with a north wind of about 20 mph. So, of the 54 hole format, The Merit Amateur was able to get in 45 holes.
Tournament director Marty Carmody says it is "a testament to the condition of the course and our superintendent, John Nelson."
