NCGA Super Senior: Dennis Younglove leads with 67
ELK GROVE, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2014) — El Macero Country Club member Dennis Younglove is halfway home to another big super senior victory.

Younglove, who resides in Davis, jumped into the lead at this week’s annual NCGA Super Senior Championship on Monday, carding a championship record low 5-under 67 at par-72 Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove.

Earlier this year, Younglove won the Sacramento County Super Senior Championship held at nearby Mather Golf Course.

Younglove, who played in the 2012 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, didn’t waste much time in making his presence felt. Starting on the back-nine, he’d open with a 2-under 34 with birdies on holes No.12 and No.17. After making the turn, Younglove briefly slipped with a bogey on No.3, but he’d quickly make up for the miscue, carding birdies on four his final six holes. The big push was a string of three straight birdies from holes No. 4 through No.6.

Also opening strong was Del Rio CC member Gil Wymond, Wymond, who finished T-10 in the last year’s championship, had a 69 that featured five birdies and two bogeys. Also starting on the back, Wymond put together a streak of three straight birdies on holes No. 13 through No.15.

Alone in third place at at 72 is Modesto GC member Tom Phillips. Also starting on No.10, Phillips closed out his front-nine with back-to-back birdies on holes No.17 and No.18 for a 1-under 35. He’d play his back-nine at 1-over with two bogeys and a birdie.

Six shots behind Younglove, in a tie for fourth after first round 73′s, are Bennett Valley GC member Vic Shellenberg and Empire Ranch GC member Craig Armstrong. Shellenberg posted five birdies but also had a crucial double-bogey on the par-3 16th. Armstrong carded four birdies but suffered a double-bogey on the 17th.

Gregory Saiki, Herb Jensen and Monterey’s Donel Geisen all are T-6 at 74. Jensen competed in last week’s annual Staedler-Jetter Cup at Poppy Hills.

Defending champion Ron Johnson, playing out of Diablo CC, is T-24 following a first round 78.

Tuesday’s final round is slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
