Quarterfinals set at Argentine Amateur as Conners advances easily
Corey Conners
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Nov. 14, 2014) — Medalist and No. 1 seed Corey Conners of Canada won two matches on Friday at the Argentine Amateur, advancing into the Quarterfinalists along with two other top-six seeds.
Conners, who earned a first-round bye with his six-shot stroke-play qualifying win, defeated Leandro Albornoz (4-and-3) and Jason Smith (4-and-2) to put himself in the final eight, where he will face Argentinian Lisandro Eyherabide.
Conners, who just finished his senior season at Kent State University, is having a spectacular 2014 season. Along with a win at the Jones Cup, he has runner-up finishes at the Ontario Amateur, North & South Amateur, and U.S. Amateur, where he lost to surprise winner Gunn Yang. He also tied for fourth at the Canadian Amateur.
Fellow Canadian Austin Connelly, who recently committed to the University of Arkansas, is also in the quarterfinals where he'll face Juan Alvarez of Uruguay. Alvarez knocked off five-seed Alejandro Perazzo 6-and-4 in the round of 16.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 seed Gustavo Montares of Venezuela was upset by Argentinian Andres Schonbaum 2-and-1 in the round of 16. He'll match up against Irishman Richard Bridges on Saturday morning.
Two native Argentinians, Jesus Dario Montenegro and Andres Gallegos, round out the final eight players.
