Docherty, Walsh post first-round 65's at Saguaro Amateur

MARICOPA, Ariz. (Jan. 2, 2015) — Sean Walsh, of Gonzaga University, and Alistair Docherty, of Chico State, share the opening-round lead at the Saguaro Amateur in Maricopa, Ariz. at seven-under par.
Walsh's round was bogey free for the Keller, Texas native while Docherty, a Canadian-born native of Vancouver, Wash., made one bogey and an eagle among six birdies.
The tournament, which is in its second year, hosts countless ranked collegiate and amateur players in the calendar year's first highly-ranked event at the newly renovated Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. Golfers are playing the course at 7,324 yards and a par 72.
The defending champion, Taylor Moore of the University of Arkansas, shot an even-par 72 and is in a tie for 21st.
David Synder of the University of Kentucky is alone in third place at five-under after birdieing his final two holes.
This 54-hole event will conclude on Sunday.

men’s amateur golfers from all over the United
States. Most players are college golfers on winter
break. All players must have completed high school
by January 1 and must have a handicap of 3.0 or
lower. The host club, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, has
hosted the Arizona Amateur three times as well as
U.S.
Open and PGA Tour qualifying.
