Kyle Weldon opens New Year's Invitational with one-shot lead

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Jan. 8, 2015) — Kyle Weldon, a senior at Kansas State University, posted 69 onto the New Year's Invitational opening round leaderboard to lead by a stroke over University of Toledo senior Chris Selfridge.
Weldon, who lead his Wildcats in the 2013-2014 season with a 73.6 stroke average, has 20 players, including Selfridge, within four shots of him entering Friday's second round.

Golfers are competing at St. Petersburg Country Club in the calendar year's second major event. The Saguaro Amateur concluded last week with Sean Walsh of Gonzaga taking home the title by five shots.
Defending champion Sam Horsfield, a high-school senior who will attend the University of Florida in the fall, is one of seven people tied for seventh at even-par 72.
