Sofia Garcia of Paraguay captures South American Women's Amateur

LIMA, Peru — Sofia Garcia trailed second-round leader Lucia Gutierrez by 12 shots, yet somehow found a way to end Sunday in Lima, Peru with the South American Women's Amateur title.
Gutierrez, who won the 2014 event, struggled over the weekend in her attempt to defend in her home nation's capital. The Cal-Berkeley golfer shot 77-82 on Saturday and Sunday after opening the tournament with 71-72. She finished in a tie for 11th place
Garcia opened with 79-76, then catapulted up the leaderboard with a 66 on Saturday, followed by a closing 73 to squeak by for a one-shot win.
Four players were part of a tie at second place, including Maria Fassi of Mexico, Milagros Chavez of Paraguay, Maria Dunne of Ireland, and Gemma Dryburgh of Scotland.
