Tye Gabriel battles tough course for Wine Country Cup win
Tye Gabriel, 2015 Wine Country Cup winner
NOVATO, Calif. — As the leaders were struggling, a fifth-year senior at St. Mary's College Tye Gabriel made a gael of a charge with a final-round 72 and a two-day total of 147 to win the AmateurGolf.com Wine Country Cup by seven shots over four golfers — Mac Marr, Forbes Collins II, Hunter Rappleye, and reigning Silicon Valley champion Jonny Baxter.
Driving was the key to his victory at StoneTree Golf Club in Novato as Gabriel only missed two fairways over the two days — 26 out of 28 fairways for 93% accuracy rate. But his putter wasn't too bad either, having no three putts Sunday and just two in round one.
The shot of the day came from Pierce Kamensek, who came all the way from Vancouver, Canada to make a hole in one on the eighth hole.
From 173 yards, he used a seven iron and his Pro V1 to drain the shot. Playing partner Tucker Williams was heard around the course yelling, "Boom Baby!" when he saw it go in the hole.
The senior flight was won by steady and consistent rounds of 77-77 by Pleasant Hill's Dale Bouguennec. He won by three over Mark Miller of Brentwood.
Chris Hyland's two-day total of a net 139 (71-68) were good enough for a 9 shot victory over Spencer Short and Jesse White. Chris' two-day gross score, playing one tee up from the championship flight, was 75-72 for a 147 total.
