But the lowest of the group was 47-year-old Todd White of Spartanburg, S.C., who shot six-under 65. White, a 2013 Walker Cup member, had a stellar front nine that included five birdies and a bogey. Out in 32, White made three more birdies, and his second bogey, en route to a back-nine 33 to post 65.

His opening round leads a trio of players at 66, including Patrick Christovich of New Orleans and Clemson teammates Cody Proveaux and Billy Kennerly.

White is a 13-time USGA participant, including two appearances in 2014. He reached the round of 64 at the U.S. Amateur and lost to eventual runner-up Brad Nurski in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Mid-Amateur. Scott Harvey, the man who defeated Nurski in the final, shot 68 on Thursday and is tied for eighth along with 2015 Jones Cup winner Austin Connelly and six other players.

Among those at three-under 68 are four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur winner Nathan Smith, Brazil's top amateur golfer Andre Tourinho, and Peru's highest ranked player Patricio Alzamora.

Clemson continued to spot the leaderboard as one of three players tied for fifth at 67 is Hilton Head area junior golfer Bryson Nimmer, who has committed to play for the Tigers beginning this fall. The reigning Crump Cup winner Michael Muehr is also at 67, as is Oklahoma State commit Zachary Bauchou.

Other notable scores from Thursday's opening round include Corey Conners of Canada, the second-ranked amateur in the world according to the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com Rankings, who opened at two-under. His 69, which included an eagle and four birdies, puts him in a tie for 16th.

Though the defending champion Will Murphy is not in this year's field, the 2013 champion Austin Langdale is. He opened with 73 and is tied for 68th.
