Matt Cohn leads AGC California Medal Play
STEVINSON, Calif. (April 11, 2015) -- Matt Cohn of San Francisco knows how to play in the wind. Today at Stevinson Ranch, the former Oklahoma U. golfer tamed 30 mph gusts with solid ball striking, and one big assist from his playing partner Clifford Smith of Denair.
On the 16th hole (the first of the finishing three named "The Gauntlet") Cohn hit into a healthy grass bunker left of the green and thought his ball was lost.
"My partner Clifford thought he saw a ripple in a small mound of dirt caused by a gopher," said Cohn. "After gingerly moving the sand, we located my ball and I was able to drop, and get up and down for par.
Cohn leads the combined Mid Am and "Under 25" field by a shot over John Greco of Sunnyvale; Patrick Burda (Modesto) and Nick Moore (Monterey) are giving chase at 76.
Indeed, any player who broke 80 today was shooting the equivalent of scratch golf.
George Kelley, owner of Stevinson Ranch, fired 79 to lead Seniors, while Dorothy Donnelly (Salinas) and Chris Ladd (Petaluma) shot the only red number scores of the day (70) to pace the Net Division.
Tomorrow's play is an 8:00am shotgun.
