LIVE SCORING: Stanford ahead by five at Western Intercollegiate
Maverick McNealy
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Rounds one and two were completed at the 69th playing of the Western Intercollegiate on Saturday, with nearby Stanford shooting seven-over during the first 36 holes to grab a five-shot lead over Texas before play was suspended due to darkness.
The Cardinal were led, as usual, by their stud sophomore Maverick McNealy, who sits in a tie for third place after opening rounds of 68 and 70. Also at 138 for Stanford is Viraat Badhwar, a sophomore from Australia. His back-to-back rounds of 69 pushed the Cardinal to a slim lead heading into the tournament's final round on Sunday at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
Texas sits five shots back, with 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Scottie Scheffler pacing the Longhorns with 66 and 68. He leads the individual race by three over Shotaro Ban of California.
While Stanford and Texas finished their two opening rounds before play was halted, third-place Oregon, as well as UC Irvine and the University of Texas-El Paso, were not able to squeeze in their last few holes and will have to finish Sunday morning.
