Maverick McNealy
PULLMAN, Wash. — One of the hottest college
golfers
in the
nation right now is Stanford sophomore Maverick
McNealy.
The native of Portola Valley, Calif., and son
of
Sun Microsystems co-founder Scott McNealy, set
multiple records on Wednesday while leading his
Cardinal to their second straight Pac-12
Conference
title. His final-round 61 is the collegiate course
record at Palouse Ridge, and his 72-hole total of
18-
under 262 is a Pac-12 Championships record.
The individual win for McNealy is his fifth of
the
2014-2015 season, and third of the spring to go
along with victories at The Prestige at PGA West
and
The Goodwin. Winning by ten shots over Oregon
freshman Aaron Wise, McNealy led the Cardinal
in
a
10-under final round, where he accounted for
nine of
that.
McNealy's 61, which featured nine birdies
and
was bogey-free, tied the Stanford 18-hole
record,
held by Cameron Wilson and Tiger Woods.
“The game plan for the start of the day was
to be patient and to press my
advantage when I got it,” said McNealy. “It felt
great from the get go. I was thinking
pedal to the metal, because obviously our team
was in it and it didn’t really matter how
the individual thing was shaking out anymore,
but
I wanted to get more birdies to help
the team.”
Sophomore Viraat Badhwar fired 68, and
junior
David Boote and freshman Jeff Swegle posted 70
as
Stanford came from nine back to win by 14 over
Oregon, and by 15 over third-round leaders
Arizona
State.
Looking for their first Pac-12 title since
2008,
the Sun Devils shot the third highest team total
of
the final day to reluctantly settle for third place.
Though top-ranked junior Jon Rahm carded 68,
the
five others shot two-over or higher.
Wise, the Ducks' only freshman at the
championship, took second place with a final-
round
67. Junior Zach Foushee was impressive, as
well,
tying for sixth place and shooting 68 on
Wednesday.
