Three-peat for Texas Longhorns at Big 12 Championship
TULSA, Okla. — Freshman Scottie Scheffler, the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur champion, led the University of Texas to their third consecutive Big 12 Championship. Playing Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., site of multiple major championships, the Longhorns ran away with a 25-shot win on the difficult par-70 course, with Scheffler winning the individual title at a 72-hole total of even-par 280.
Scheffler and teammate Gavin Hall finished one-two on the leaderboard, while Kramer Hickok tied for fifth and Beau Hossler tied for eighth. Overall, all five Texas golfers finished inside of the top-20, leading to the team's runaway victory on Wednesday.
Texas went wire-to-wire at Southern Hills, with Texas Tech coming as close as anyone to completing with their Big 12 rivals from Austin. The Red Raiders took second place by 13 shots over TCU and were led by their senior from France, Clement Sordet. At seven-over par 287, Clement tied for third in his final Big 12 Championship.
The medalist honor for Scheffler is his second straight, having won the Western Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
The Longhorns, prior to their 2012 victory which set off the three consecutive wins, had not captured a title since 2002.
