BURLINGTON, Iowa — Defending champion Jon Olson of Ankeny is tied for the lead after round one at the Iowa Mid-Amateur, shooting two-under 70 on Friday. Sharing the lead with Olson is Bret Taylor of Booneville, who bogeyed his first hole before making three birdies and no bogeys during the rest of his opening round.

Olson, who won in 2014 in a playoff over J.D. Anderson, had a wild front nine with four birdies and a bogey. He was tamed by the back nine, however, shooting 37 with no birdies.

Last year's runner-up Anderson is tied for eighth place at 74 along with recent Coleman Invitational winner Mike McCoy. McCoy, who just returned from the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, was at even par before bogeying his final two holes.

McCoy's partner at The Olympic Club, Gene Elliott, is tied for fifth at 73 along with Tom Norton and Jim Becker. Tied for third place are Scot Cook and Scott Briggs, both posting even-par 72.

This 54-hole event is being held at Spirit Hollow Golf Club, a par-72 that is playing to just over 6,900 yards.
