Jon Olson claims second straight Iowa Mid-Amateur title
Jon Olson
BURLINGTON, Iowa — For the second straight day, Jon Olson of Ankeny blistered the front nine at Spirit Hollow Golf Course, shooting three-under 33. And despite going a combined four-over on the back nine, Olson successfully defended his Iowa Mid-Amateur title, winning by two shots of Bret Taylor of Booneville.
The win is Olson's third at Spirit Hollow, having won the 2011 Iowa Match Play and 2012 Iowa Amateur at the course, as well.
“Yeah, I have the trifecta,” Olson told the IGA. “Even in 2003 when we had the State Amateur here I played well. I think I finished 5th. I am not sure why, it just work out well (here)."
Last year's runner-up to Olson, J.D. Anderson of Johnston, finished in a tie for eighth place at 149, while recent Coleman Invitational winner Mike McCoy tied for 12th at 150. Having just returned from the The Olympic Club where he competed with his partner Gene Elliott and reached the round-of-16, McCoy posted rounds of 74 and 76.
Elliott took third place at 145, three shots behind Olson and one back of Taylor, who shared the first-round lead. Taylor got to two-under before making bogeys on holes 13 and 14.
Terry Cook of West Des Moines finished in fourth while Nate Dunn of Cedar Rapids grabbed fifth place.
