LOSSIEMOUTH, Scotland (May 30, 2015) -- Talk about symmetry. The four leaders in the Scottish Open Stroke Play (a tournament with a total of 13 countries represented) are from four U.K. countries.
Owen Edwards of Wales, Marco Penge of England, Cormac Sharvin of Ireland, and Ewen Ferguson of Scotland all posted the exact same number (69-69=138) over the first two rounds at Moray Old to share the lead at 4-under.
Edwards, a member of the Wales National Golf Squad, birdied 5 of the last 10 holes to get in the clubhouse early, then joked in a Tweet:
"Scotland, if you wanted to rain now, I wouldn't stop you."
We're not sure what the rest of the day held for weather, but judging from the weather the pros faced at the Irish Open, we're guessing it wasn't 72 degrees and sunny.
The four leaders have got plenty of company, as an additional 13 players are at par or better. Many of the top players in the field are looking to increase their Walker Cup visibility, as the playing of that biennial team match is set for September at England's Royal Lytham and St. Annes. A win here would put any player on the GB&I Walker Cup selection radar.
Edwards, an up-and-comer who took 6th at the Duncan Putter, has some seriously talented company at the top. Ewen Ferguson is looking for his third victory of the year, and Cormac Sharvin recently took 2nd at the Irish Amateur. The fourth player at the top, Marco Penge, like Edwards, is outside the top 500 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.

In a Walker Cup year, players from 13 countries are teeing up in the 72-hole event in Lossiemouth to chase the prestigious title.

Moray Golf Club, which hosted the 77th Scottish Student Golf Championships while celebrating its 125th anniversary last year, is one of the most admired links courses in Scotland. A series of course improvements have recently been made, which include the redevelopment of 24 bunkers, the introduction of three new bunkers and removing four, to enhance the much-loved routing of the Old Course which was first laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1889.
Carrick Neill, part of the Arthur J. Gallagher group and the SGU’s official insurance partner, continue to provide their support to the championship.
