Will Gordon takes early lead at Greystone Invitational
Will Gordon
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 24, 2015) — Incoming Vanderbilt freshman William Gordon, ranked No. 17 in the class of 2015, got off to a spectacular start at the 2015 Greystone Invitational at Greystone Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama. His mistake-free day started with birdies on holes 1 and 2, then added another on the 207-yard par-3 7th hole to go 3-under on the front nine.
The back nine included another three birdies, but his eagle at the 531-yard par-5 13th hole was the difference on his day, giving him an early three-stroke advantage over Nathan Mallonee (Georgia State University) and Dalton Skinner (University of Montevallo). Gordon finished the day with an 8-under 64.
Mallonee and Skinner also started well with birdies on the first two holes, but each bogeyed the par-3 seventh. They also both birdied the 13th, but Gordon’s eagle there is the difference.
Also in the field is Michael Cotton, fresh off a backside 29 that helped him win the 106th Texas Amateur last week. He’s currently tied for 8th with five other golfers at 2-under.
This year's field of contestants represents 22 States in the United States and nine different countries including Australia, Canada, Iceland, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway and South Korea.
