Corey Pereira leads inaugural Sierra Players Invitational
Corey Pereira
MEADOW VISTA, Calif. — Play began late this morning at the 1st annual Sierra Players Invitational hosted at the Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Sr. designed Winchester Country Club.
The tournament was created by Phillip Dawson Jr., a Sacramento-area PGA Professional, and brings together some of the top talent from the Sacramento region as well amateurs from across California.
Leading the way after a first-round 64 is Corey Pereira of Cameron Park, Calif. Coming off a victory last week at the Sahalee Players Championship, Pereira kept his momentum going with an eight-under showing that included two eagles and five birdies.
The first eagle came at the long par-5 4th which was soon followed by a two at par-4th 6th hole, taking advantage of the tees being moved up to just over 300 yards. The eagles led to a front nine 30 which was followed by a ho-hum 34 on the back nine for the University of Washington junior.
Pereira is trailed by Fresno State commit Alex Lee and University of Pacific’s Sj Maeng. The pair fired 4-under par 68s and will be grouped with Pereira for tomorrow’s second round.
With only seven players under par, Winchester Country Club is proving to be a tough test of golf for the majority of the field. Players will hopefully improve upon Monday in their second and final rounds tomorrow and Wednesday morning.
