Sierra Players Invitational: Corey Pereira maintains lead
Corey Pereira
MEADOW VISTA, Calif. — University of Washington junior Corey Pereira, who is fresh off a big victory last week at the
Sahalee Players Championship, is one round away from his second consecutive victory. He leads the inaugural Sierra Players Invitational by two headed to the final day at Winchester Country Club.
The tournament, created by Sacramento-area PGA Professional Phillip Dawson Jr., brings together some of the top talent from the Sacramento region as well amateurs from across California.
Pereira opened with 64 in a round which featured two eagles, and had a hard time following the stellar first round when he shot two-over 74 on Tuesday. Still, the Cameron Park, Calif. native leads Fresno State commit Alex Lee of Carmichael, Calif. by two.
The par-72, 7,100-yard Winchester Country Club is playing difficult in the tournament's first running with only five players sitting under par after 36 holes. The course played much tougher on day two as just one player posted a sub-70 round — Nicko Craig of Lincoln who fred 69. He'll enter the final round tied for eight at one-over.
Sacramento State golfer Owen Taylor is four back in third place at two-under 142, while Colten Passey and Matt Cohn are tied for fourth at 143.
