MEADOW VISTA, Calif. (July 8, 2015) — The 1st annual Sierra Players Invitational concluded this afternoon with Corey Pereira taking the trophy.
Pereira started the day two strokes ahead of Alex Lee. However, after the first three holes, Lee took over the lead by one after birdies at holes 1 and 3. Pereira would answer in a hurry by making birdie on three of the next four holes and would then eagle the par-5 9th hole to regain the lead by three shots.
Pereira’s steady, even-par back side would be enough to withstand Lee’s birdie-birdie finish and take the trophy. This is the second win in a row for Pereira, who just recently won the Sahalee Players Championship.
Hunter Rappleye, of Elk Grove, Calif., made the biggest charge of the day, shooting a 5-under 67 to climb up 12 spots into a tie for third. The St. Mary’s junior made an impressive six birdies with four coming on the more difficult back nine. Rappleye tied with Sacramento State’s Owen Taylor for third place at 1-under par total.
The Sierra Players Invitational was created by Phillip Dawson Jr., a Sacramento-area PGA Professional. Dawson wanted to create a tournament not only for his own students, but for some of the top amateur golfers on the west coast. With a great field, a high-class venue, and a high-caliber champion, the Sierra Players Championship looks to be an elite-level amateur tournament in years to come.
